Revision Surgery

There can be many reasons why some patients don’t do well or require a revision (second) surgery. Initially, the indication or reason to operate may not have been correct (such as operating for allergy), there may be innate (internal or genetic) factors which slow down healing or produce excess allergy, and external factors such as pollution, dust etc may also play a role. The important aspect is the surgery itself. Attention must be paid not only to the actual surgery but also the pre-op preparation and the post-op care (which is usually 2-8 weeks).

The surgery itself must be complete and remove all disease and not leave partitions or disease behind. This is in the surgeons hand and will dictate the success of the surgery. When we assess patients who have had prior surgery, we are looking at all these factors, understanding the patients’ problems and initiating medical treatment before deciding if a second surgery will be helpful. Again, with 35 years of experience, we are well equipped to make decisions and if required, perform revision surgery that will help the patient.
