Myringotomy
Myringotomy is a minor surgical procedure where a small incision is made in the eardrum (tympanic membrane) to relieve pressure and drain fluid from the middle ear. It’s often done to treat middle ear infections (otitis media), Eustachian tube dysfunction, or conductive hearing loss due to fluid buildup.
The procedure typically involves local anesthesia (in adults), followed by a small incision in the eardrum. Fluid is suctioned out, and a tiny tube (grommet) is inserted to keep the incision open. Myringotomy provides quick relief from pain and pressure, improves hearing, and reduces the risk of recurrent infections. Recovery is usually fast, with minimal downtime. However, it’s essential to keep water out of the ear until the eardrum heals. While risks like infection and scarring are possible, they’re rare.
